while drawing the detailing and materiality into a contemporary design delivery.
Warm, earthy tones were championed throughout the home. The original ceiling colour was retained, refreshed with Aalto Reptilian on the beams and staircase. Although the kitchen ceiling was completely replaced, the original timber hue was continued, paired with walnut cabinetry to extend a mixed-timber story.
An asymmetrical kitchen peninsula floats above earthen-toned tiled floors on a single mitred dowel end. The circular motif repeats in half-forms across the cabinetry, evoking connections to late mid-century furniture design. Textured Cosentino porcelain cut to the circular timber end posts nods to authentic period detailing, while the same stone framing the cedar venetians offers a modern twist that ensures the kitchen keeps a contemporary edge.
The home is a cornucopia of organic hues and materiality, including hand-formed ceramic wall sconces coloured with local earth. Original straw-hued grasscloth provides the essential anchoring point for an authentic 70’s vibe, complemented by painted surfaces, tiled finishes, furnishings, and accessories.
The main bathroom, with its challenging dog-leg footprint, enabled our design team to create a unique solution. A hand-formed bath carved from Hebel blocks and finished with miniature Japanese mosaic tiles is positioned perfectly to frame forest views through a newly introduced long, low window. The sculptural bath transforms a previously awkward space, sitting within a wet room lineated by a bespoke colour-framed glass door. Warm bronze Sussex tapware pairs elegantly with misty green Caroma basins and stained JSC timber tongue-and-groove panelling.
Elsewhere, Aruru woollen carpet in Moss by Bremworth stretches across the floor in a beautiful expanse of period-relevant hue and pile. It was especially rewarding as designers to replace the original carpet with this contemporary re-release.
In the living area, original leather armchairs and a copper-topped coffee table sit perfectly alongside a modern timber winged sofa. Lamps — often overlooked in New Zealand interiors — provide design-centric features, from authentic original-era pieces to the sculptural Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin floor lamp.
