The Gunson Street project by Rarebirds Interiors involved the complete redesign of three bathrooms in a Freemans Bay home, Auckland — including the main bathroom, ensuite, and powder room. Originally an insurance remediation project to resolve failed waterproofing, the spaces were fully stripped and reimagined. Finishes include Caesarstone surfaces by Laminex, Prime Panels veneer and melamine cabinetry with Blum hardware, and bathroom fittings by Plumbline and Villeroy & Boch. Tile selections were sourced through Tonic Tile Lounge, while lighting includes designs by Flos and Astro, supplied via ECC. Resene paint finishes complete the palette. Rarebirds created a strong, contemporary result with architectural detailing, layering three distinct tile selections — including green feature tiles — across the three spaces. This Freemans Bay project reflects Rarebirds Interiors’ expertise in high-end bathroom design, spatial planning, and detail-rich residential interiors across Auckland and beyond.

  • “Sensational artwork requires sensational interior design to ensure that three new bathrooms pack the same creative punch.”

Pristine white horizontal interior cladding, set against distinct gunmetal architectural detailing, were also strong elements to consider when designing this home’s bathroom spaces. These elements served as inspiration, enabling the Rarebirds Interiors design team to craft bold design ideas through their material and fittings choices.

The whimsical, balloon-like Flos Glo pendant installation over a Victoria & Albert freestanding bath is not the only hero piece in the main bathroom. A Rarebirds Interiors warm oak vanity, expertly crafted and featuring more Flos lighting and a bold gunmetal undermounted basin, provides another striking design moment.

Large, moody LaFaenza Vis Military Green wall tiles, teamed with an Ergon Lombarda terrazzo floor tile and smaller white textured subway tiles, complete the desired sense of artistic drama in the main bathroom. These same tiles, arranged in a new layout, create continuity in the home’s ensuite, accentuating the shower’s soaring skylight and providing a beautiful tonal juxtaposition to a pure white Falper vanity.

With a Francis Bacon artwork hanging outside the door, the powder room had the formidable task of balancing against artistic greatness. Black Ergon Lombarda terrazzo tiles, colour-blocked on both the floor and walls, create a strong geometric impact alongside the pure white subway tile. This textured subway tile, stacked vertically, connects all three bathroom spaces and reinforces the home’s architectural detailing.

In 2022 I had Rarebirds design and manage the rebuild of my three bathrooms. I found the team originally by asking my trusted tradies who they loved to work with, then stalking their (obvious) design sense online before meeting the team.

I had strong ideas of how I wanted the bathrooms to look, and limitations on the layout which they respected while still guiding and improving the design in every way.

Their eye for detail is exceptional, the small lighting and design details they insisted on are what I notice and appreciate now everyday, combined with a wealth of knowledge about fixtures and relationships with suppliers which was massively important.

Their management of the trades and scheduling was so impressive; they know and use good people and kept it under control even in the madness of 2022 Covid times.

I’m delighted with the end result, their budgets were accurate, they coped admirably with my freak outs and I’d recommend the team highly.
