Rarebirds Interiors were engaged for kitchen design, material specification, and end-to-end coordination on this refined industrial project in Greenhithe, Auckland. The resulting space balances raw textural elements with sculptural finesse — featuring dark Prime Panels Prime Art Veneer cabinetry, a Neolith stone benchtop, and a statement pendant crafted from rusted barbed wire and LED strip lighting. Integrated appliances by Miele and Fisher & Paykel are seamlessly layered into the architectural framework, alongside Haro Floors, Resene Paints, and Archant mesh-panel detailing. The space is anchored by Blum Legrabox hardware, Buddy Tapware from Plumbline, and bold accents from Buster & Punch. Awarded Kitchen of the Year at the inaugural 2022 Home Magazine Interior Awards.

Greenhithe Project Role:

The Greenhithe Kitchen by Rarebirds Interiors brings urban sophistication to a rustic modern home in Auckland. Designed for entertaining, the layout features distinct kitchen and bar zones, aged brass detailing, rustic-sawn timber cabinetry, and a sculptural Neolith benchtop. A salvaged chandelier made from rusted wire and auto parts adds industrial edge, while pale diagonal timber flooring and an original brick wall soften the palette. Featuring Miele appliances, mesh-fronted wine fridges, and dramatic LED lighting, this kitchen balances craftsmanship and drama with everyday functionality.

  • led the design directive for Rarebirds Interiors. An existing brick wall feature would need to be retained and woven into the proposed kitchen design to harmonise with the completed scheme.

The juxtaposition of a warm, dark colour palette—of deep-toned, rustic sawn timber cabinetry—and the cool, smooth, rectilinear concrete shapes of the Neolith benches and island begins a conversation between urban and rustic design language. The centralised island features a bespoke aged brass strip, which cleverly and seamlessly unites these two polarities and becomes a complementary element to both. Bevelled detailing to the table’s timber legs is repeated throughout the cabinetry in considered areas, giving a distinct craftsmanship feel to the kitchen.
Aged brass detailing is carried through into the tall Buster & Punch knurled cabinet handles and the Archant metal mesh doors of the built-in bar cabinet, both sitting beautifully in the sultry colour palette.

Rarebirds Interiors championed our love of the handcrafted—designing and commissioning an LED-swathed chandelier crafted from rusted wire fencing and auto parts—creating a deliberate focal point in the kitchen space. Diagonally laid timber flooring, finished in a pale wash, prevents the space from becoming too serious or over-angular, and brings the brick wall into the overall palette.

The kitchen’s design is purposefully kept to distinct zones, with the bar cabinet and fridge being easily accessible without disturbing the cooking zones. Two wine fridges are revealed behind the mesh doors in the bar area, which is softly lit to highlight the continuation of moody timber and Neolith stone. The solid laminated timber table seats up to six people, enabling immediate interaction with those making the magic happen with the Miele appliances. The kitchen’s spatial layout works well for our client’s busy family and their hectic entertaining schedule.
